“Kanya is inspired by real events that have taken place in my life. I come from a conservative brāhmaṇa community in southern India. I remember when I first got my period, how suddenly everything in my life was so different. I wanted to capture the inner contradiction of a teenage girl who is trying to cope with this physical and mental transformation. I believe that my film has something to say to anyone, regardless of who it is or where it comes from, “explains the director, who is currently preparing her first feature film debut with the working title Change of Heart.

“Kanya started her festival campaign with three big premieres in a single day in three different countries on two continents. The world premiere took place in front of the audience at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea (BIFF), which is the largest Asian festival, where the Oscar-winning Parasite also premiered. That same evening, the European premiere of the film took place at Raindance in London.
