Seoul, South Korea – August 10, 2024 – A rapidly growing wave of pickleball enthusiasm is sweeping across South korea, particularly among the 5070 demographic (those in their 50s and 70s). the sport, known for its low impact and ease of learning, is experiencing a surge in participation, mirroring a trend already well-established in the United states.

Pickleball, a paddle sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is played on a badminton-sized court with a lowered net. Players use solid paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over the net. scoring is similar to many racquet sports, with points awarded only to the serving team.

The sport’s appeal extends beyond its accessibility. It’s also enjoyed by high-profile figures like Bill Gates, who has reportedly played for over 50 years, further boosting its visibility.

Choi Hui, 71, Chairman of the gold Pickle Ball Club, highlighted the intergenerational aspect of the sport, stating, “Families, including elementary school-aged children, are enjoying playing together.”

The low physical demands and minimal equipment requirements make pickleball an ideal health management activity for active seniors. Unlike tennis, it doesn’t require powerful serves or extensive court coverage, reducing strain on joints.

According to the Korea Pickleball Association (KPA), founded in 2018, the number of pickleball clubs nationwide now exceeds 100, with an estimated membership base of over 3,000 individuals. The KPA is actively working to standardize rules and promote the sport nationally.

The game’s simplicity and familiarity – drawing from tennis and table tennis – make it easy for seniors to pick up. A standard pickleball is approximately 7cm in diameter. the court size, one-third that of a tennis court, minimizes joint stress and physical exertion.

Players can typically achieve a basic level of proficiency within three to six months of learning, and the sport is easily accessible to younger players as well, fostering family participation.

Park Chae-hee, Vice Chairman of the KPA, emphasized the cognitive benefits of pickleball, stating, “Beyond the excellent aerobic exercise, it’s remarkably beneficial for neurological development.” Studies suggest the hand-eye coordination and strategic thinking involved in pickleball can help maintain cognitive function.

Pickleball originated in 1965 in Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA, created by Joel Pritchard, a U.S. congressman,and his friend Bill Bell. They initially devised the game as a recreational activity for their children during wet weather when other outdoor sports were unavailable.
