Pickford apologizes for causing injury to Van Dijk | NOW

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has apologized for his rash tackle on Virgil van Dijk. The defender of Liverpool and Orange sustained a likely serious knee injury on Saturday.

Pickford came in hard on Van Dijk, who remained on the ground for minutes with a painful right knee and had to be replaced. Chances are he’s been out for months.

“Everyone keeps asking about it, so I suspect the tackle was worth a red card,” Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said after the game at Goodison Park, who finished 2-2.

“I don’t think it looked very good. Jordan came to me after the game. He apologized for his action and asked me to convey those apologies to Virgil as well.”

Interestingly enough, goalkeeper Pickford’s hard tackle did not lead to a card or a penalty kick. The VAR had established that Van Dijk was narrowly offside.

Richarlison says sorry for charging Thiago

Incidentally, Van Dijk was not the only Liverpool player who had to leave the field with an injury. Teammate Thiago Alcántara had to be replaced in the final minutes after a hard charge from Richarlison, who did get red.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a hard player,” the Brazilian wrote in a statement. “I didn’t mean to injure Thiago and pulled my leg back. I’ve already sent him a message with an apology and will do it again.”

Everton leads the Premier League with thirteen points from five games. Liverpool follows with ten points.
