Piast Gliwice Advances in the Polish Cup with Last Minute Goal

The next stage of the Polish Cup competition began on Tuesday. The matches played to advance to the 1/8 finals brought a lot of emotions. It was no different in the match at the stadium in Nieciecza, where Bruk-Bet Termalica hosted Piast Gliwice. Although the fans gathered in the stands saw more yellow cards than goals, the match was decided in unlikely circumstances.

The first matches of the 1/16 final of the Polish Cup were full of goals. Korona Kielce defeated Legia Warszawa’s reserves 4-2 after overtime, and Warta Poznań defeated Stal Brzeg 4-0 away. The fans of Bruk-Bet Termalika Nieciecza and Piast Gliwice were probably counting on equally spectacular victories, but only one goal was scored at the first league stadium. However, the result of the match was decided only in extra time.

Piast Gliwice advances in the Polish Cup. A goal at the last minute

For most of the match at the stadium in Nieciecza, the hosts had the ball. The intensity of the match resulted in a total of five yellow cards (two for Bruk-Bet, three for Piast), but the ambitious play of the players did not translate into goal opportunities. Both teams had three shots on goal, although at the end of regulation time the scoreboard was a goalless draw. This could have heralded the second overtime of the day.

However, this did not happen. In the fourth minute of added time, the visitors managed to make an action that decided the fate of the match. The author of the goal important for the 1-0 victory was Michael Ameyaw, who appeared on the pitch in the 66th minute, and Miłosz Szczepański provided an assist for the midfielder’s goal. Therefore, after the final whistle, Piast Gliwice could enjoy promotion, while the hosts had to accept a dramatic defeat.
