Pianos and guitars went on sale in an emergency

“When we had to close the stone shops, there was an unprecedented purchase through our e-shop,” Vladimír Koliha, the regional manager of Muziker for the Czech Republic, told Práva. The purchases thus more than made up for the fact that stone shops were closed in an emergency. “It was the second Christmas,” Koliha remarked.

Interest in musical instruments also grew by the online retailer Mall.cz. “During the quarantine, people tried to confiscate themselves and their children, and sales doubled,” Mall.cz spokeswoman Pavla Hobíková told Práva.

While interest at Muziker is now approaching normal, Mall.cz continues to register increased demand. “Even after the abolition of quarantine and the release of most government measures, sales still remain at 100% growth in most categories,” said Hobíková.

People were most interested in pianos. “Compared to last year, when customers bought guitars the most, this year there was the greatest interest in keyboards, followed by guitars and drum kits,” said Hobíková.

This was also confirmed by Koliha. Demand for Muziker was also for equipment for computer connections such as USB microphones or sound cards, but also for guitars and ukuleles.
According to Koliha, there was a trend in stone shops, when after their reopening, less people went, but they shopped more. He also noted that musical instrument manufacturers have had dramatic delivery delays due to plant shutdowns in China or Indonesia.

“Our customers react smartly and logically, so they don’t delay purchases. It reminds me a bit of the situation under the previous regime: when you wanted a wheel with a derailleur, you didn’t solve the color, but who is the head of the hardware store to get some at all in half a year, “he explained.

The seller is now actually experiencing a shortage of some brands and replacing them with others in the offer. According to Koliha, the situation should stabilize in the second half of the holidays.

Online sales of musical instruments grew during the state of emergency, but as the stone shops were closed, some domestic manufacturers, including the renowned producer Petrof, therefore added more losses.

During the quarantine, children also showed a greater interest in playing musical instruments. In addition to closing their schools due to the risk of coronavirus infection, the government also closed their circles, could not see their friends, and many of them became bored at home after a few weeks.

“The daughter has been playing the transverse flute for several years, but she also decided to try the saxophone. Because it is an expensive tool, in the end we borrowed it for an acceptable 350 crowns a month, “said a 40-year-old mother from Řevnice in Central Bohemia.

“Maybe she was inspired to do so by watching the series The Simpsons, where their little girl Lisa is playing the saxophone. My daughter looked at them for days after school closed, “she added with a smile.
