In the middle of January, the studio “Tasse Film” with the support of the National Cinema Center has started filming a historical melodrama about the Third Awakening of Latvia and a young woman in politics during this time. The prototype of the main character, played by actress Erik Eglija-Grāvele, is the politician of the Awakening time Ita Kozakeviča.

The first day of the shooting of the new feature film “Life Is Aborted” takes place on January 14 at the Riga Congress Hall. The upcoming film is the debut of director Ilze Kung-Melgaile in the feature film genre, the representative of the National Film Center (NKC) Kristīne Matīsa informs the portal “Delfi”.

Scenes from the Latvian SSR People’s Forum at the end of 1988 were filmed in the solemnly ruined Congress House. The historical appearance of the Congress House was immortalized for the last time before the reconstruction, Matīsa points out.

“Life Is Aborted” is the first feature film by the well-known short film and documentary director Ilze Kung-Melgaile.

The film will tell the story of a free-spirited and enterprising young woman who has fallen into the crossfire of harsh relationships and political ideals. The story takes place between 1988 and 1990, when the spirit of the Awakening vibrated in the air in Latvia. The prototype of the main character is the young journalist and politician of Latvian Polish origin Ita Kozakeviča, one of the brightest stars of the Latvian Awakening, 1990 “Woman Latvia”. Her life dropped rapidly – only at the age of 35, asking questions about what this woman would have done if her life had continued and had not been interrupted.

Erik Eglija-Grāvele has been chosen for the main roles of the film, Gints Gravel, Ilze Ķuzule-Skrastiņa, Sandra Klavina, Ieva Kerēvica, Lauris Subatnieks, Mārtiņš Upenieks, Mārtiņš Meiers, also two Lithuanian actors – Vytautas Kaniusonis and Darius Meskauskas. The cinematographer of the film is Maxim Efross from St. Petersburg, he has already shot the short films “Signs of Light” (2010) and “Randev” (2004) together with the director Ilze Kung-Melgail. artist Ilze Trumpe, actor selection director Māra Liniņa, executive producer Katrīne Zeile and others.

The film is produced by the studio “Tasse Film”, which is directed by producer Aija Bērziņa.

According to Matīsa, “Life Interrupted” will be filmed in several stages throughout 2022 – in January, April, late May and June. The film is supported by the National Film Center and the State Culture Capital Fund. Its premiere is scheduled for March 2023.
