She pointed out that last week a fire destroyed the Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, leaving 13,000 asylum seekers homeless, often without food and water.

Raubiško emphasized that the Covid-19 pandemic also poses an additional risk to human health and life, pointing out that the consequences of the fire are the result of European asylum policy, creating a situation where asylum seekers stay in overcrowded camps for long periods.

The I want to help refugees stressed the need for the EU to act together to address this situation and provide asylum seekers with safe shelter and humane conditions, as camps are only a short-term solution.

In the opinion of the representative of the movement, so far the attitude of the Latvian side towards the reception of asylum seekers has been negative. As an example, she mentioned the statement of the Minister of the Interior Sanda Ģirģens (KPV LV), in which he rejects the possibility for Latvia to receive asylum seekers from Greece. Raubiško noted that such a position is unacceptable.

“Latvian citizens voted for EU membership 17 years ago. We have enjoyed the benefits of this membership. At the same time, we believe that Latvia is ready and can take more responsibility for solving common challenges, show solidarity with other EU member states and support for universal humanity, “noted Rubishko.

The organizers of the campaign – the “I want to help refugees”, “Protest” and “Europeans for Humanity” movements – have called on everyone concerned about the situation of asylum seekers to come to the protest with their posters.

LETA has already reported that illegal immigrants left homeless after a fire in a camp on the island of Lesbos were transferred to Greek camps on Thursday. Police have previously stated that the purpose of the operation is to ensure public health.

More than 12,000 illegal immigrants, mainly Afghans, Syrians and citizens of various African countries, have been left homeless in Camp Moria after the fire. Authorities believe the fires were deliberately caused by the immigrants themselves, who are dissatisfied with the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Authorities have previously indicated that some illegal immigrants do not want to go to the new camp because they hope to get to mainland Greece. By Wednesday morning, only 1,200 people had arrived at the new camp, but in the evening large groups of migrants began moving to the camp.

Latvia, in support of Greece after the fire in the asylum seekers’ camp, will deliver 300 stretchers and 3,000 blankets from the state’s material reserve resources.
