Keep up to date with “Matisse in the 1930s” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and “Modigliani Up Close” at the Barnes Foundation, two exhibition previews are expected. Both exhibitions will be on display in Philadelphia until the end of January 2023. With “Disney100: The Exhibition” the city faces another world premiere in the spring of 2023.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art will host a special exhibition until January 29, 2023 Henri Matisse, one of the most important representatives of classical modernism. Entitled Matisse in the 1930s, it is dedicated to a decade of the artist’s life that is considered a crucial decade in his career, but has never been the subject of an exhibition in its own right. More than 100 works are on display, including well-known and rarely presented paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, illustrations, documentary photographs and films. Philadelphia was deliberately chosen as the venue, as it was a visit in 1930 as part of a commissioned work for the Barnes Foundation that inspired Matisse’s new creative approach, which is evident in this outstanding artist’s later works. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris and the Musée Matisse in Nice, two other museums deeply linked to Matisse and which will present “Matisse in the 1930s” to their audiences in France in 2023.

Modigliani up close
In 2022 the Barnes Foundation will celebrate its centenary. In the autumn of its anniversary, the gallery invites you to immerse yourself in the world of Amedeo Modigliani with the exhibition “Modigliani Up Close” and to learn exciting details about the working methods and materials of the Italian artist. New academic insights from specialists across Europe and America provide detailed insights into the artist’s unique style and shed new light on his working methods. The exhibition is the result of years of research by restorers and curators from all over Europe and America and features over 50 works from important museum collections around the world. The exhibition will be on display in Philadelphia from October 16, 2022 to January 29, 2023. Dr. Albert C. Barnes himself was one of the first Modigliani collectors in the United States, so Modigliani Up Close is of particular importance to the Barnes Foundation.
