A study by Pfizer and BioNTech concluded that the vaccine is still effective against Covid-19, including the omicron strain, after receiving three doses of the vaccine, but two doses may not be sufficient to neutralize the omicron strain.
The study concluded that “the third dose provides similar levels of neutralizing antibodies to the omicron strain seen after two doses” for other coronavirus variants.
A vaccine specifically for the omicron, currently being developed by BioNTech, will be available in March, BioNTech said.
“While two doses of the vaccine may still provide protection against a serious disease caused by the omicron strain, it is clear from these preliminary data that protection is being improved with the third dose of our vaccine,” said Albert Burla, CEO of Pfizer.
A new variant of Covid-19 with a large number of mutations was identified in the Republic of South Africa (South Africa) on 24 November, due to a rapid increase in the number of infections in that country. The 15th letter of the Greek alphabet – omicron – has been assigned to denote the new type of virus.
The new strain has already been identified in 57 countries, according to UN figures, and the number of confirmed infections has reached thousands.
Scientists at the US government and the World Health Organization (WHO) told AFP this week that the omicron strain appears to be more dangerous than other strains of coronavirus, but more research is needed.
