Pfizer / BioNTech corona vaccine approved for European Union

The drug is already being administered in the United States and the United Kingdom. The first EU countries will start vaccinating from Sunday. In the Netherlands, op January 8th the first shot and on January 18 the vaccination starts on a larger scale.

Nursing homes

The Netherlands will initially receive 507,000 doses, good for about 250,000 people. The cabinet has announced that it wants to be the first to vaccinate employees of nursing homes and institutions for the mentally disabled. The hope is that this will also protect the residents of these institutions.

The Health Council will issue a new advice within a few days: the priority procedure can still be adjusted on the basis of this.

The permit that will be issued is a conditional permit. That means that Pfizer must keep the EMA monthly informed of the results of the studies that are still ongoing and the EMA will reassess the vaccine in two years.

On January 6, the EMA will judge Moderna’s vaccine. The Netherlands hopes to receive the first doses of this in January.
