At the end of a long promotional campaign, Peugeot published the official photos and information regarding the new 408 model. The French compact received a new body, which combines elements of sedan-coupe and SUV. The engine range includes three units, one 130 hp petrol and two 180 and 225 hp hybrid plug-ins
The new Peugeot 408 will debut in Europe in early 2023
A clarification must be made from the outset to remove any confusion. Although it bears the same name, the French crossover should not be confused with the sedan for the Chinese marketwhich was revealed the other day.
As the name suggests, the new 408 for Europe is positioned in the range between the 308 hatchback and the 508 sedan. Both in size and price. Prices have not been announced yet, but it is expected that the entry-level version PureTech 1.2 will cost from about 32,000 euros.
The new STLA Medium platform of the Stelantis Group will be ready only in 2024. As a result, the new 408 was developed on the EMP2 architecture, which is also used by the other models in the range.
Production of the model will start at the plant in Mulhouse (France) at the end of this year. The commercial debut in Europe is scheduled for the beginning of 2023.
Fastback body with SUV look and sedan dimensions
In terms of size, the car measures 4,690 mm in length, while the wheelbase of 2,787 mm is almost identical to that of the Citroen C5 X. The new 408 is the most spacious Peugeot model, say the brand’s representatives, providing generous space for rear passengers. The trunk has a load volume of 536 liters and reaches up to 1,611 liters with the seat folded.
The height is 1,500 mm, this 408 being shorter compared to a classic SUV (1,640-1,750 mm). The five-door body is fastback, very aerodynamic. The ground clearance is higher compared to a conventional sedan.
An interesting design artifice is what the French call “cat ears”. They are located at the C-pillars and optimize the airflow backwards. At the rear, the tailgate with a different design and the bumper that integrates a speaker reminiscent of the Subaru WRX stand out.
The exterior is complemented by narrow Matrix LED headlights, body-colored front grille and 17- to 20-inch wheels. The flared wings of the wheels have plastic protections, regardless of the color chosen for the body. In addition, the model also offers the latest generation of Peugeot i-Cockpit.
In terms of technology, its new one has four USB-C ports, Wi-Fi connection and over-the-air updates of the multimedia system. In addition, passengers will have a Focal Premium audio system with 10 speakers and a 690 W amplifier.
The engine range includes plug-in hybrid versions
Like the new Citroen C5 X, the basic engine of the new Peugeot 408 is a 1.2-liter PureTech with 130 hp. Resources are transmitted to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Peugeot did not disclose the performance, but the Citroen model with the same engine needs 10.4 seconds to reach “one hundred”.
The offer also includes two plug-in hybrid variants of 180 and 225 hp. Both are based on a 1.6-liter PureTech engine, which works with an 81 kW electric unit.
And in the case of these models the resources are managed through the same automatic transmission. The French did not reveal the autonomy in electric mode for either of the two models with charging at the outlet, but this could be about 60 kilometers. A 100% electric version will be released a little later.
