Petraviča emphasizes that last year GMI offered to raise up to 99 euros

It has been agreed with the municipalities that from 2021 they agree to raise GMI to 80 euros, but they will probably have to sit at the table and talk about a much faster increase, not only to 80 euros. The offer of the Ministry of Welfare will be 109 euros, which results from the calculations of raising the basis for the calculation of social security benefits and minimum pensions to 109 euros, which in 2021 requires 33.2 million euros. Thus, the decision of the Constitutional Court will be a good weapon in the fight for next year’s budget, in which, among others, the Ministry of Welfare will offer to raise the minimum wage from the current 430 to 500 euros per month. Ramona Petraviča believes that another round of negotiations with local governments will have to be held to increase the GMI.

“80 euros is not what the Constitutional Court or the Ombudsman expects. Now we will definitely have to talk about these issues again, sit down at the table again, agree and put 109 euros instead of 80, so, of course, there will be a discussion about who pays for what. The decision of the Constitutional Court is clear to both us and local governments, the judgment must be complied with, another meeting must be convened and we must talk about the fact that 80 euros will no longer be enough, because we will also have to raise the minimum pension and social security benefit. ”

Ramona Petraviča emphasizes that already last year she offered to raise GMI to 99 euros, and if it had been done, then the issue would probably not have reached the court. At the same time, she reminds that last year the government did not support the plan to improve the minimum income level system, which provided for a significant increase in other benefits as well.
