There is sad certainty: American artist and wildlife photographer Peter Beard is dead. His family announced this in an official statement, which was published via Instagram, among other things. The 82-year-old had been missing since the end of March.

Peter Beard loved nature

As US media reports consistently, local police confirmed on Sunday (local time) the discovery of an older man’s body “in a densely forested area” at Camp Hero State Park in Montauk, Long Island. Shortly afterwards, the family said that his death would break their hearts.

“Peter defined what it means to be cosmopolitan: open to new ideas, new encounters, new people, new ways of life and being. Always insatiable and curious, he pursued his passions unrestrainedly and perceived reality through a unique lens,” he said to pass on his family. He died where he was at home: in nature.

Who was Peter Beard photographing?

Peter Beard became famous for his wildlife pictures from Africa. He also took portrait photos of David Bowie or Mick Jagger and worked for “Vogue”. His friends included celebrities such as Andy Warhol and Truman Capote.

According to US media, the photographer has suffered for several years dementia and had to cope with at least one stroke. It was not his way of carrying a phone or even a wallet on his forays into nature.

After his disappearance, a search operation was started with over 75 police officers and firemen. The location of his body is adjacent to his property on Long Island. (cam)
