“Save Lives” Program contained 145 suicide attempts in the Metro

The Collective Transportation System (STC), through the “Save Lives” program, contained 145 suicide attempts at various stations in the network during 2019; the majority of cases were presented on line 1 Observatorio-Pantitlán.

He reported that 56 percent of those who tried to take their lives were men, and 44 percent women, in an average age range between 20 and 29 years; the agency added that from 2016 to date 359 attempts have been contained.

Although 145 suicides were avoided this year, only 103 accepted psychological attention and channeling to health institutions. The rest received only initial attention from elements of Industrial Safety and Hygiene or Health Management.

Through “Save Lives,” the Health and Social Welfare management of the STC, the psychologist Natalia Paola Canela Prado provides containment and dissuasion to the suicide, either face-to-face or by telephone.

In the multidisciplinary scheme, the STC maintains permanent coordination with instances such as the Secretariats of Health, Citizen Security, Psychiatric Care Services (SAP), Citizen Council and the Institute for Attention and Prevention of Addictions, as well as the “Fray Bernardino Psychiatric Hospital” Alvarez. “

In addition, the staff is trained in the Prevention of Suicide, taught at the Institute of Training and Development (Incade) of the STC.

The training includes raising awareness about suicide and its relationship with possible triggers, such as current or suspended psychiatric care, substance abuse, emotional problems, economic conflicts, health problems, abandonment of family members, which are the main causes.
