The Perseids are a swarm of meteors, bits of matter that fell off the periodic Comet Swift-Tutte. The comet orbits the solar system, making one orbit around the sun in 133 years. Each year, a swarm of Perseids enters the Earth’s atmosphere, and it shines in the sky. In addition, shooting stars are considered by many to be an omen of happiness.

August is a special month for fans of shooting stars. This is when the peak of the Perseid rain takes place. This phenomenon lasts quite a long time, from July 17 until August 24. This year, the maximum of the swarm, also known as “Saint Lawrence’s tears”, falls on the night of August 12-13.

Perseids are particles the size of a grain of sand. Where and when is it best to observe the Tears of St. Lawrence?

The night of the shooting stars coincides with the full moon, which also falls on August 12. This means that the conditions for observing the phenomenon will not be particularly favorable. The glow of Earth’s only natural satellite can reduce the number of visible meteoroids. At the peak of the swarm, the frequency of observed falling stars can be as high as 100 per hour. This year, due to the full moon, only the brightest will be visible in the sky.
