Permanent Hair Dye Increases Risk of 3 Types of Cancer

The risk of cancer was higher in women with naturally light hair.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Product use hair dye permanently it can increase women’s risk of certain types of cancer. Women’s natural hair color also affects the risk cancer the.

This was disclosed in a study from a Harvard University research team published in the journal BMJ. In the journal, the research team reveals that permanent hair dye can slightly improve cancer risk breast, skin cancer, and ovarian cancer in women.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer has also classified occupational exposure to hair dye as a possible carcinogen. However, there are no caveats regarding the personal use of hair dyes as the evidence beforehand is inconclusive.

To get more convincing evidence, a research team from Harvard University conducted a study that analyzed data from 117,200 women. This data includes measurements of hair dye exposure in women who become participants.

All participants did not have cancer at the start of the study. The participants were then monitored for 36 years.

The results showed that any use of permanent hair dye was associated with a slightly increased risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin. This increased risk was seen to be higher in women with naturally light hair colors who used permanent hair dyes.

The use of permanent hair dye is also associated with an increased risk of three types breast cancer and also ovarian cancer. The three types of breast cancer are ER-negative, PR-negative, and hormone receptor negative breast cancer.

The increased risk of Hodgkin’s lymphoma is also seen with the use of permanent hair dyes. However, this increased risk was only found in women with naturally dark hair color.

“The possible explanation is the various color choices hair dye “permanence relates to the concentration of the material, where the darker color has a higher concentration,” said the research team, as reported Times Now News.

The research team reveals that these risks will continue to increase with the accumulation of the amount of permanent hair dye used by women. The study results also emphasize that the use of permanent hair dyes does not affect the risk of death from cancer use in women. Women who use and do not use permanent hair dye have the same risk of death from cancer.

In addition, the research team also said there were several limitations in this study. One of these limitations is the lack of racial diversity in the participants.

“(These findings) provide some reassurance to concerns about a possible link between personal use of permanent hair dye and an increased risk of cancer or death,” said the research team.
