What is it like to have one of the rarest blood types in the world? But what if you need a transfusion?
Red blood cells, red blood cells, carry oxygen throughout the body. If we lose a lot of blood during an operation or in an accident, we need a quick transfusion. It would be easy if we all had the same type of blood, but it’s not.
There are 342 antigens on the surface of the erythrocytes – molecules capable of stimulating the production of antibodies. The presence or absence of certain antigens determines a person’s blood type.
About 160 of the 342 antigens in a blood group are found in most people. If you are missing an antigen that 99% of people have, your group is considered rare, but if you have an antigen that 99% of people do not have, then your group is very rare.
