ANNOUNCEMENTSEdited

Ten people were killed in the New York subway. Six others were injured in other ways. The culprit has disappeared.

The city police are not treating this as a terrorism case. Five people are in critical condition in hospital but are expected to survive. Justice thinks the perpetrator’s weapon malfunctioned.

A man in a gas mask detonated a smoke bomb in a subway car during the morning rush hour and then opened fire. People were shot in the subway car and on a platform. Other injured people have, among other things, smoke inhalation or have been injured by flying material. Nothing is yet clear about the motive.

Emergency services found the injured at the 36th Street station in western Brooklyn. Shortly before, the emergency services had received a report of smoke in the subway. The situation at the metro station was considered dangerous: people ran out of the station in panic, others lay bleeding on the platform.

Images posted on social media show smoke billowing from a subway train. After that, people run out of the vehicle. Some travelers have fallen. You can also see that there is blood on the platform.

Investigators found a gun at the station. They also found smoke bombs and other items that are currently under investigation. Officers are said to be looking for a van with Arizona plates.

“There was smoke, blood and people screaming,” an eyewitness told a local radio station. Another witness saw many panicked people from another subway station. “It was crazy,” he told the AP news agency. “Nobody knew exactly what was going on.”

Police are still looking for a burly black man wearing a green safety vest. He hasn’t been identified yet. People have been asked to avoid the area around the station. The schools in the area are closed: no one can enter the street and only students can enter the buildings.

Metro traffic in the area has been disrupted. Police are present at many other subway stations in the area. Emergency services are on the spot en masse.

President Biden and the US Attorney General have been briefed on the matter. There are also contacts between the White House and the New York authorities.
