People are returning to the city, but the excitement has not subsided / Article

Oleg, who lives in Odessa, admitted that it is calmer in the city now. However, even though Russian missiles are not flying as often as they used to, the situation is still tense. “Anyway, air alarms are heard, air defense systems are working. Calmer on the one hand, tense on the other.”

According to Oleg, many Odessans have returned to the city. “If my house was half empty in March, now it’s full again, many are coming back.”

Tatiana Ivanova, an Odessa resident working in the field of entertainment, said: “Everyone understands what is happening in Ukraine. There are Odessans who are now showing great interest in enjoying their city again, coming on excursions, taking their children and grandchildren to tell them more about our great city. Ukrainians also come to us from various parts of our country – mostly from those that are now unfortunately surrounded by sad events. They live in Odessa.

To reduce stress, to forget a little, not to hear explosions – they come to us, and in this way fill their lives with joy.”

A couple of hours’ drive east of Odesa is the city of Mykolaiv, one of the cities in Ukraine that Russian forces shell almost every day. Further east is the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), where the situation is also very tense, and on Thursday it was reported for several shootings at the NPP.

Odesa is in the spotlight due to the fact that Ukrainian grain exports have now resumed from the region’s ports. There are always concerns about the safety of grain transportation. However, there are no more significant incidents. Last week, the first ship with grain left the port of Odesa, there have been several more and others with grain cargoes are still waiting.

This process is closely monitored, the Ukrainians are very careful because they do not trust Russia to really comply to the end agreement on grain export.

That’s why you can’t access the coast and the port area in the Odesa region, it’s strictly monitored, it’s forbidden to film there. However, the Ukrainians in Odessa, especially the farmers, appreciate very much the fact that it has been possible to start the export of Ukrainian grain.

CONTEXT:

Due to the Russian invasion, Ukraine severely reduced its grain exports.

However, on July 22 in Istanbul, Ukraine and Russia signed separate agreements with Turkey and the UN on the resumption of grain exports from Black Sea ports. Ukraine in advance announced, that the agreement on the resumption of grain exports will be signed only with Turkey and the UN, rejecting any direct deals with Moscow. Russia signed a separate identical agreement with Turkey and the UN.

The most important port city of Ukraine Odesa was rocked by new explosions on July 23. Russian armed forces shelled the city just a day after an agreement was signed in Turkey to end the blockade of Ukrainian ports and resume grain exports. Ukrainian officials blamed Russia for the targeted shelling of grain warehouseswhich the signed agreement prohibits.
