Pendulum Breaks 15-Year Silence with New Album ‘Inertia’
After a 15-year hiatus, the influential drum and bass band Pendulum is back with a new full-length album, Inertia, slated for release on aug. 22. To whet fans’ appetites, the group has unleashed a new single, Save the Cat.
A Heavier Sound Emerges
Since their reunion, Pendulum has been exploring a more metal-infused drum and bass landscape. This evolution was evident in their eps released in 2021 and 2023.Save the Cat
continues this trend, delivering a heavy and aggressive sound. Rob Swire, the band’s vocalist, unleashes full-throated screams, while Pendulum’s signature breakbeat style is twisted into an electro-industrial frenzy.
The Story Behind ‘Save the Cat’
According to a press release, Save the cat
was born from a period of intense personal reflection and frustration. Swire elaborated on the song’s origins:
It was written during a period of self-questioning and frustration… in the wake of two breakups – one that unraveled slowly over time, and another that hit without warning.
Rob Swire
He further added a sentiment that many can relate to:
love felt like something I didn’t fully trust myself with anymore.

‘Inertia’: A Deep Dive into the Album
Inertia is a collaborative effort, co-produced by Swire and Owen Charles at Pendulum’s london studio. The 16-song tracklist is a mix of familiar and new, compiling the eight tracks from their previous EPs alongside eight fresh compositions. The album features previously released collaborations, including:
Halo
(featuring Bullet for My Valentine)Louder Than Words
(featuring Hybrid Minds)Mercy Killing
(featuring Scarlxrd)Napalm
(featuring Joey Violence & Brae)
Additionally, Inertia introduces new collaborations with Wargasm on Cannibal
and AWOLNATION on Guiding Lights.
Pushing Boundaries and Finding Themselves
Swire explained the band’s experimentation with a heavier sound, stating:
I was basically testing how far we could push Pendulum… Seeing what we could get away with. I always looked at The Prodigy as the benchmark. They started out as pure rave – breakbeat, hardcore – but they evolved. They became their own sound. You don’t even really associate them with breakbeat anymore. They just are The Prodigy.
Rob Swire
He also reflected on the personal journey embedded within the music:
It’s the sound of Pendulum finding themselves again, and me figuring myself out to a certain extent. Breakups do that – they strip things down and show you who you are. I’m just trying not to become the guy who needs to go through one just to make a record.
