Pele diagnosed with respiratory infection, says medical bulletin – 02/12/2022

Admitted to the Albert Einstein hospital since last Tuesday (29), Pelé was diagnosed with a respiratory infection, according to a medical bulletin released today (2).

The football king has undergone periodic re-evaluations since he began treatment for colon cancer identified in September 2021. There are no forecasts for his discharge yet.

Pele was diagnosed with cancer in September 2021 during routine exams at Einstein. At the time he underwent surgery to remove the tumor and returned home after a month. Since then he has undergone chemotherapy treatments, having to return to the medical center every month for periodic check-ups.

Last year, during the month of hospitalization for surgery, Pele was sometimes taken to intensive care. According to the bulletin released at the time, the attacking midfielder suffered from respiratory instability.

“Edson Arantes do Nascimento was admitted to the Israelite Albert Einstein Hospital last Tuesday (29) for a reevaluation of chemotherapy therapy for colon cancer identified in September 2021. The medical team diagnosed a respiratory infection, which was treated with antibiotics. The response has been adequate and the patient, who is still in a common room, is stable, with a general improvement in his health conditions. The former player will remain hospitalized in the coming days to continue treatment.”

King has colon cancer

In September 2021, Pelé went to hospital for his annual routine exams, which were delayed due to the pandemic. During the battery of tests, the doctors discovered a tumor in the right colon, in the region of the large intestine, and so it was decided to undergo the operation.

The football king was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection in February this year, during another round of routine tests. He was hospitalized for two weeks until he was treated and discharged.

Before the cancer, Pelé had already undergone some hip surgeries and other health problems in recent years, which made it difficult for him to move. His son Edinho also said the limits would depress the king. In general, the three-time world champion has reduced his public appearances since the pandemic.
