Jobs » With an average of 14 million journeys per day worldwide, Uber is the number one mobile application for connecting users with drivers providing transport services. Among his 3,200 drivers on Swiss soil is Marc Schaller, a Friborg citizen recently recruited by Uber Eats, a delivery service of cooked meals created by the founders of Uber.

Marc was looking for a side job when he came across the application: “I was curious to discover this app” which I have heard so much about, and then I wanted to do a little sport. I told myself that the delivery position could combine pleasure and finance, so I started, ”he says. In fact, the young man only travels on a traditional bicycle despite the effort that it requires of him: “As this means of transport is slower and more tiring than others, many couriers give up the bicycle in order to be able to carry out a maximum of races. For my part, I want to play sports, even if it makes my job difficult, ”he says. Before adding, laughing: “I admit I tried the electric bike but I fell, so I did not repeat the experience and I stuck with the bike!”

Going down miles for almost three hours per evening, Marc strolls from Villars-sur-Glâne to Granges-Paccot via Givisiez and Corminboeuf, with his batch of dishes hanging on the back. In the midst of a health crisis, the Fribourgeois said that he felt useful: “I am happy to be able to help the restaurateurs to continue operating during confinement. Not to mention that customers always seem delighted to see me arriving with my dishes, “he jokes.

No mask received

According to Marc, the measures prescribed by Uber Eats are well respected by restaurateurs. However, he regrets that the company does not offer sanitary equipment to protect its couriers: “We do not receive a mask, gloves or hydroalcoholic gel, even though it happens that customers come into direct contact with us”, explains the young man.

Overall, Marc says he is disappointed with Uber Eats: “The situation of the deliverers is precarious. On the one hand we have no social security cover, on the other hand our errands are more and more badly paid via the gradual introduction of new taxes “, denounces the courier. He also regrets the general decrease in remuneration. “Uber hires so many deliverers that supply exceeds demand, it forces competition and couriers have no choice but to accept longer wait times between each race. For an extra job, it may be enough. To make it his job, on the other hand, it is better to think twice about it, ”warns Marc. Note that on these subjects, the Youth Page emails sent to Uber remained unanswered.
