Product shipment PC decreased in Q1 2022 after PC purchases related to the pandemic COVID-19 started to decline. The cause is Chromebook. How come?
This data was released by Gartner as well as by IDC. According to IDC, PC shipments in Q1 2022 were 80.5 million, while Gartner posted a lower figure, down 7.7% compared to Q1 2021.
According to Gartner, this decline was triggered by a drastic drop in Chromebook shipments. If Chromebook shipment data is not included, PC shipments during the quarter increased by 3.3% compared to Q1 2021.
Gartner also said the decline in Chromebook shipments was partly due to a decrease in the number of Chromebook purchases from educational institutions, which is a very tasty market for Chromebooks, with the number of devices for teachers and students reaching more than 40 million units.
In terms of brand, Lenovo is still the master of PC products, followed by HP, Dell, and Apple. Even so, only Dell, Apple and Asus recorded growth in Q1 2022, as quoted by detikINET from The Verge, Tuesday (12/4/2022).
Looking at the 2020 data, Chromebooks were the belle of the year, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Schools are buying Chromebooks to help with the implemented distance learning transition.
The PC market as a whole saw 11% growth in 2020, with Chromebook sales of over 30 million units. This figure briefly decreased in Q3 2021 due to the supply of components being hampered, but returned to normal in Q4 2021.
“The focus shouldn’t be on PC volume declines year over year because that’s predictable,” said Ryan Reith, group VP at IDC.
According to him, attention should be focused on the success of the PC industry in shipping more than 80 million PCs when logistics and supply chain conditions are still chaotic, including a number of problems related to geopolitics and the ongoing pandemic.
