Pavluts allows expiration dates for Covid-19 certificates / Article

Until now, Latvia has refrained from determining the validity period of Covid-19 certificates, and this fall The National Health Service said there were no plans to change this condition.

Pavluts, on the other hand, pointed out that such a deadline has been set in a number of European countries. According to him, Latvia will also move towards setting a nine-month term for Covid-19 certificates, similarly as the European Union could do for travel.

The deadline could refer to the primary vaccination against Covid-19 as a whole.

“So the certificates would have an expiry date and, accordingly, an extension vaccination would have to be carried out to extend it,” the minister said.

He also did not rule out the possibility of a change in the certification of a single dose of the vaccine produced by Janssen.

Asked about mandatory vaccination against Covid-19, Pavluts said the government had previously discussed the idea of such an obligation for older people, but the idea was rejected for legal reasons.

“On the other hand, when it comes to compulsory vaccination of the whole society in terms of the epidemiological situation, I think – together with the Ministry of Justice we need to analyze the Austrian decision, the potential German decision, their legal basis, given that the legal system is related. This is definitely worth considering, and

I cannot rule out the possibility that Latvia could go that way, ”Pavļuts revealed about mandatory vaccination.

The politician also indicated that he plans to re-offer mandatory Covid-19 tests to immigrants in Latvia, which was intended due to the new omicron type of the virus and for which the government failed to agree this week.

At the same time, the goal in Latvia is to vaccinate 90% of the elderly against Covid-19. Pavluts hopes the government will get support for additional payments to medical institutions to reach more seniors.

The Minister also revealed that there may be a shortage of Covid-19 self-testing schools in Latvia next week. However, if delivered will be able to them provide within the specified time, then their deficit will not last long. “We will deal with temporary difficulties,” Pavluts added.
