Patrick Balkany placed in police custody in connection with a new case

New legal troubles could be announced for Patrick Balkany. The former mayor of Levallois-Perret was taken into police custody on Wednesday January 6, 2021 in a case of embezzlement of property from a public deposit, abuse of corporate assets and illegal taking of interests, for which several members of his entourage are also heard, said Thursday the parquet of Nanterre. The former elected official was released in the evening, but it is not excluded that he will be summoned again before the investigating judge, said a source close to the case, confirming information from L’Obs.

Patrick Balkany is targeted in a case of “misappropriation of property from a public deposit”. Between 2008 and 2015, a room located in Levallois-Perret and not supposed to be used was rented to various companies, said the Nanterre prosecutor’s office. The daughter of Patrick Balkany, who owned companies that benefited from this room, is also targeted by the procedure and has been placed in police custody. The son-in-law of the former mayor as his chief of staff were also placed in police custody, as well as other people, according to the prosecution. Police custody continued Thursday evening.

Numerous court cases

The investigation was entrusted to the Central Office for the Fight against Corruption and Financial and Tax Offenses (OCLCIFF), said the Nanterre prosecutor’s office. The Balkany couple were convicted on appeal in March for tax evasion and in May for money laundering. They lodged an appeal against this latest conviction. Last July, the former mayor of Levallois-Perret was indicted on suspicion of having used municipal agents for personal purposes while he was mayor.
