A positive test “does not amount to infectiousness or a viable virus,” say the study authors. The only exception: patients with weakened immune systems, such as people with cancer who are being treated with chemotherapy or patients on immunosuppressants after a transplant. The virus could remain viable for a longer period in them. These people would require longer clinical care but would no longer be contagious. So they too would no longer need to be isolated.
