Pashinyan calls on his countrymen to remain calm

Armenia Prime Minister Nikols Pašinjans, who angered many of his countrymen by concluding an agreement to end hostilities in Nagorno – Karabakh, on Monday called for an end to the violence and peace.

Pashinian stressed that violence and incitement to violence can in no way be a form of government action. He said the opposition was also expected to deny the violence. Authorities said on Saturday they had thwarted a plan to assassinate the prime minister and detained Artur Vanecyan, the leader of the opposition “Motherland” party. Vanecian was released on Sunday because the court concluded that there was no legal basis for his detention.

Pashinyan has faced widespread protests and sharp public criticism for an agreement with Azerbaijan on a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh. Protesters have demanded Pashinyan’s resignation, calling him a traitor, as well as breaking into several government buildings.
