Parties – Freiburg im Breisgau – Southwest SPD wants to use momentum from the federal election for the country – politics

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – For the SPD in Baden-Württemberg, the election year 2021 offered a lot of shadow, but also some light. Now the Social Democrats want to draw lessons from the super election year at their first presence party conference in over a year and redefine their course. 500 members are expected at the Freiburg trade fair on Saturday (10.30 a.m.). They are supposed to nominate the delegates for the federal party conference on December 9th and 10th, at which the SPD chief Saskia Esken from Calw stands for re-election.

The debacle in the state elections in March is still serious. The SPD landed at 11.0 percent, just ahead of the FDP and AfD. In addition, the attempts by state chief and top candidate Andreas Stoch to convince the Green Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann of a traffic light coalition with the liberals failed.

In the federal elections, the Southwest SPD achieved a significantly better result, thanks in part to the popular candidate for Chancellor Olaf Scholz. It landed with 21.6 percent behind the weakened CDU (24.8 percent) in second place. The Greens came to 17.2 percent.

Most recently, the SPD state leadership presented an independent analysis of the reasons for the election failure in March. Among other things, it said that people no longer knew what the party stood for, that they had distanced themselves from the people’s attitude to life. The state executive now wants to draw conclusions and better work out the SPD’s core brand and improve communication.

After the Corona crisis, the SPD leadership mainly wants to realign social policy. That is still the brand essence of the party, said Stoch recently. The latest polls, in which the SPD was even ahead of the CDU or equal, gave him hope. If Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) no longer runs in the next state election in 2026, the SPD will “play for first place”.
