The conference of parliamentary leaders was associated, this Thursday, “by an overwhelming majority” with the condemnation expressed by the President of the Assembly of the Republic to the “xenophobic statements” of the deputy of Chega, André Ventura, and decided to put “an end” in a “unfortunate episode of democracy”.
In successive statements to journalists in parliament, this message was conveyed by representatives of the PS, BE, PCP, PAN and PEV at the leaders ‘conference, noting that Ferro Rodrigues’ position deserved the agreement of “all parliamentary groups”.
Asked about the condemnation vote initiatives that they had already announced, either the BE parliamentary leader, Pedro Filipe Soares, or the vice-president of the PS bench, Pedro Delgado Alves, considered it “unnecessary” to continue the process, which would only serve to “amplify” André Ventura’s statements.
For his part, the deputy from Chega demarcated Ferro Rodrigues ‘statements and the position of the leaders’ conference and stated that he would not apologize for the statements he made, since he does not consider them offensive.
This week, Joacine Katar Moreira presented a proposal for the restoration of existing heritage in Portuguese museums to the countries of origin of the former colonies of Portugal and, in reaction, the leader of Chega proposed that the deputy of Livre be “returned to her country of origin. “.
The president of the Assembly of the Republic, Ferro Rodrigues, considered, this Thursday, that the “xenophobic statements” of the deputy of Chega, André Ventura, suggesting the deportation of deputy of Livre, Joacine Katar Moreira, “deserve the most vehement condemnation” .
“Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, as a citizen and president of the Assembly of the Republic, considers the xenophobic statements made by deputy do Chega about deputy Joacine Katar Moreira regrettable. These are statements that deserve the most vehement condemnation,” wrote the president of parliament, in a note sent to the Portuguese agency.
On the same note, Ferro Rodrigues also leaves a warning: “Hate cannot be a weapon in politics”.
“And it will not be so in the Assembly of the Republic, a sovereign body that is faithful to the values of democracy and tolerance”, he adds.
