‘Parents said to commit suicide’

18-year-old Mounir Jamal goes viral on social media after sharing a conversation with his parents in which they put him on the street. A few years ago, the boy came out, which his parents never accepted. Now that he has turned 18, his parents expel him from the house.

When Mounir was 14 years old, he told his parents that he liked men. “I didn’t really want to tell, because I already had the feeling that it would not be accepted”, he tells the boy to the Dutch LindaNL. “My father is a Muslim and although my mother is not, she does support my father’s choices.”

And whether it was not accepted. When Mounir told his parents, he was beaten up. “I was completely beaten up mentally and physically. I knew my life would be terrible from then on. ” The boy fell into a depression. “At the time I was in a very dark period and threatened to throw myself in front of the train. My parents then said: ‘You should do that well. Then we are finally rid of you ‘. ”

Five days after he turned 18, his parents expelled him from the house. “They said, ‘Here’s your passport, there’s a suitcase upstairs. You can leave and we don’t need to know where you are going. We are no longer your parents. ” Two weeks later, he receives a message from his parents, the conversation he shared on Instagram. No show of interest or empathy, just a request to officially unsubscribe from them and to give his new address and phone number to the GP, dentist, etc.

Mounir has now found a place where he can go. “My parents will probably find out in a while where I am now, but I would prefer not to have them know now.”
