Paraguayan canola: growing demand and great planting capacity in the country

Within the framework of a training on the care and news of Canola in Paraguay, the agronomist Nilson Osterlein, responsible for research and technical advice to producers of the CW Trading firm, gave a technical talk addressed to producers who attended the expo Agroshow Copronar and I also spoke with Valor Agro about the scope of this product in agriculture.

The specialist mentioned that canola brings very interesting benefits to the agricultural system in Paraguay, and that in this regard, the country should take advantage of the high demand for this product worldwide.

On this point, he stressed that Paraguay has the possibility of growing in the canola area since 30% of the soybean area is available here to plant this product if a sustainable rotation system is signed up. “We would have approximately 1 million hectares to plant canola,” he said.

In addition, he maintained that there will be a significant increase in the canola planting area given that there is a growing demand for canola seeds, a fact that already occurred last year to the point that it could no longer be planted due to lack of resources. seed stock.

“The area planted with canola in the country is increasing and the industries are increasing their milling capacity and accordingly, other buyers of grains are appearing in the market, which is causing the demand at the national level to rise” , underlined.

Finally, he explained that the cultivation of canola is quite technical and special, therefore, he advised factors to take into account such as planting depth, being careful in the aspect of fertilization, which is key to having a good production.

“You don’t have to rush too much to make a premature harvest as that could harm the oil content, but overall, canola is a very easy item to produce as long as these criteria are taken into account,” he concluded.
