Parks and green spaces as well as a multitude of leisure activities in the fresh air are important components for the quality of life in large and small cities. But the combination of sightseeing and relaxation in nature can also be an important criterion for choosing a city trip destination for holidaymakers. The Capital Region USA has two urban green oases to offer, which achieved a top ranking in this year’s ParkScore® index by the non-profit organization The Trust for Public Land: Washington, DC took second place and Arlington, Virginia took fourth place.

The ParkScore® index for green cities
Since 2012, The Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore® Index has recognized the 100 greenest cities in the US annually. The ranking is determined by four factors: the percentage of residents who can reach a park or green area within ten minutes’ walk; the parking area in proportion to the urban area; investments in parks (expenditure per inhabitant); and the equipment of the parks. The latter criterion includes above all basketball hoops, dog parks, playgrounds, water play facilities, special recreational and senior offers and washrooms.

2nd place: The green US capital
Since the introduction of the ParkScore® Index, Washington, DC has consistently been in the top 10. This year, the US capital ranks second and only had to give priority to Minneapolis, Minnesota. 98 percent of Washington, DC residents live less than a 10-minute walk from a park, regardless of age, race, or income. Almost a quarter of the Washington, DC metropolitan area is made up of parks; the famous National Mall alone, with its numerous sights, is almost 60 hectares in size. In Minneapolis, however, parks only make up about 15 percent of the city’s area. There are basketball courts and water play facilities in about 85 percent of Washington’s parks, special facilities for seniors can be found in 97 out of 100 facilities.

At the gates of DC: Arlington, Virginia
Just a stone’s throw from Washington, DC – across the Potomac River – is Arlington, Virginia. The district is best known for Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon with the 9/11 Memorial, and the iconic Air Force Memorial. But also the different districts with more than 180 parks on approximately 445 hectares make up the charm of the city. This is also proven by the placement in the ParkScore® Index 2020, in which Arlington achieved 4th place. Here, as many as 99 percent of the citizens live less than ten minutes’ walk from a park and the green spaces make up eleven percent of the total urban area. A total of 120 kilometers of hiking and cycling trails are waiting to be explored. With so many outdoor activities going on, it’s no surprise that Arlington was named “Fittest City in America” by the American College of Sports Medicine in 2018 and 2019.
