Is it fair to scold a child when he can not understand the lesson given?

Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Mental Medicine Specialists (PDSKJI), Diah Setia Utami explained, the Covid-19 pandemic period had many stressor or sources of stress that cause a person to experience stressful symptoms such as isolation, sadness, anger, or even rapidly changing moods.

Stressor during a pandemic, it can be in the form of fear of the corona virus, changes in economic and social life, changes in activity patterns to be more at home, including teaching school children from home.

According to Diah, the stress that arises due to a pandemic can make parents, especially mothers who are usually tasked with teaching children at home, to vent their frustration on children who have difficulty understanding lessons.

“There are so many things that can affect a mother so that she cannot control it because of her child’s annoyance. Children are also the most helpless individuals in the home so it is easier to vent their frustrations on children than other family members,” said Diah in a webinar, Wednesday (14/10) ).

However, resentment and anger alone are not sufficient to diagnose a mother who scolds her child as having a mental problem. It may be that the feeling of annoyance, annoyance, and anger is just a momentary emotion. According to Diah, to find out a person’s mental condition, a thorough examination is needed.

“It must be checked first and we need to see if it continues to do so, if so, there could be serious mental problems,” said Diah.

Diah suggested that every mother could better understand the condition of a child who had difficulty understanding new information. Mothers also have to adapt to new habitual adaptation conditions and try a number of creative ways to make children understand a lesson.
