Panama City, May 22 (EFE) .- Panama added 2,167 new cases of covid-19 and 5 deaths from the disease this Sunday, to reach 830,287 confirmed infections and 8,227 deaths in more than two years of the pandemic, the Ministry reported. of Health (Minsa).

The Minsa report details that there are 36 patients admitted for the coronavirus in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 229 in the general ward, while 27,699 are isolated at home and 86 in hotels, for a global of 28,014 active cases.

The patients who have healed account for 794,046 since March 9, 2020, when the first case of contagion occurred in Panama, where covid has a fatality rate of 1.0%, one of the lowest in Latin America.

In the last 24 hours, 10,458 tests were applied to detect cases of covid, which showed a positivity of 20.7%. Panama has 6,112,642 tests applied to date.

Regarding the progress of the vaccination process, the report of the Updated Immunization Program (PAI) of the Minsa reports that since January 20, 2021, a total of 8,195,447 doses of vaccine against covid-19 have been administered in Panama. .

In the population between 5 and 11 years of age, 515,487 pediatric doses have been applied, according to the Ministry of Health.

A recent study by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) indicates that at least 70% of every 100 people in Panama have complete vaccination schedules, while 79% have received at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccine. .

According to this PAHO analysis, Panama is one of the countries with the highest proportion of the population completely immunized against the coronavirus, above the world average of 59%.
