Palmieri takes the road to New York

The New York Islanders acquired forward Kyle Palmieri from the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.

Travis Zajac will accompany his teammate, the Devils confirmed on their Twitter account.

In return, the Islanders send the Devils their first-round pick in 2021, a conditional fourth-round pick in 2022, along with skaters AJ Greer and Mason Jobst. The conditional fourth-round pick would become a third-round pick if the Islanders ever reach the Stanley Cup final. If such a scenario materialized, the Islanders would have the option of delaying the negotiated choice by one year.

In addition, the “Devils” withhold half the salary of the two skaters.

Palmieri had been left out for preventive reasons in the last few days to avoid possible injury. The 30-year-old has 17 points in 34 games this season. He is the last year of a contract that earns him an average of $ 4.65 million per season.

For his part, Zajac collected 18 points in 33 games during this campaign. Selected in the first round (20th overall) of the 2004 draft, the 35-year-old has never played for an organization other than that of the Devils, with which he amassed 550 points in 1,024 matches. He too will become a free agent at the end of the season, the last year of an eight-year contract worth $ 46 million.

For their part, Greer and Jobst have spent the majority of their careers in the American League, but the former has played 37 games in the National League.
