Pair of sneakers worn by Michael Jordan sold for almost $300,000 at auction – El Financiero

Two pairs of sneakers worn in 1985 by Michael Jordan fetched nearly $300,000 (5.8 million Mexican pesos) in an Internet auction organized by Christie’s.

The protagonist lot of this sale of items intended for sports collectors was a pair of Air Jordan 1, the first model of sneakers created by Nike for the NBA star, which Jordan himself wore on the pitch and which was sold for 189 thousand dollars (3.7 million pesos).

Despite the large number, there was only one bid and the lot fell short of Christie’s estimated range, which was $200,000 to $300,000.

Another pair of 1985 Air Jordan 1s, in this case autographed and likely worn by the Chicago Bulls legend, sold for $107,100 (2.1 million pesos).

They aren’t the most expensive Air Jordans, but they are the only ones sold

Sales fell short of record amounts paid in recent years for other Michael Jordan shoes: In 2020, the Air Jordan 1S grossed $560,000, and in 2021, Nike Air Ships worn by Jordan in 1984 reached nearly $1.5 million.

In total, seven pairs of Jordan shoes went up for sale in Christie’s auction that closed today, but many of them went without a buyer, as did other items offered, including two other pairs of worn shoes from tennis player Serena Williams, for which it was expected to raise up to $15,000 and $20,000 (between 290,000 and 390,000 pesos) respectively.

Nor did it find a buyer for a Los Angeles Lakers jersey worn in a game by the late Kobe Bryant and which was presented with an estimated price tag of $100,000 to $150,000 (between 1.9 and 2.9 million pesos).

Some exclusive designs were also offered at the auction, such as several pairs of sneakers resulting from collaborations between Nike and Louis Vuitton and a trunk designed by designer Virgil Abloh – who was the artistic director of the French brand and passed away in 2021 – sold for a little more than 100 thousand dollars.
