Is Caen one of the least expensive cities in France in terms of hourly paid parking? ©Margaux ROUSSET
At the end of June 2022, the City of Caen presented his parking plan for September in order, in particular, to hunt for cars suckers in the city center. As of September 1, 507 parking spaces that were free will become paying.
During the presentation of this plan, Patrick Jeannenez, municipal councilor in charge of parking, insisted on one point: “Caen is one of the least expensive cities in France” as far as hourly parking is concerned.
With €1 for 1 hour of parking in the yellow zone et €1.50 for 1 hour in the red zonewhere is the city located in relation to other cities in France?
A comparative study conducted by the City
The City’s parking center carried out a comparative analysis in March 2022 between Caen and 11 other cities in France of the same size. For parking in the red zone, Caen is the cheapest city in this study, tied with Angers (1h=1.50€). It is Annecy which arrives first in the most expensive cities of this study with 2.20€ per hour in the red zone. Orléans comes just behind with 2€ per hour in the red zone.
For parking in the yellow zone, Caen comes in 3rd position among the least expensive cities. It is Angers which gets the prize with 0.50€ per hour. Orléans ranks in pole position among the most expensive cities in the ranking with €2 per hour in the yellow zone. Note that Caen remains less expensive than Le Havre or Rouen.
How long can we park?
In the yellow zone, parking time is limited to 330 minutes (5h50). Parking is chargeable from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. except during the one-hour free period on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
In the red zone: parking time is limited to 150 minutes (2h50). Parking is chargeable from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. except during the one-hour free period on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

In larger cities, the amounts are different. Starting with Paris. Depending on the district, the price per hour is €4 or €6. Grenoble (2.50€) and Bordeaux (2.25€) are above 2€ for 1 hour of parking. In Lyon, it is necessary to count 2€ per hour in hypercentre. In Marseille, the price for one hour in the inner city is the same as the red zone of Caen, namely €1.50.
The post-parking package
If we look at the post-parking package (FPS) that you have to pay if you exceed the parking time, it is €33 in Caen. A higher amount than in the other cities in the comparative study: €30 in Le Havre, €27 in Angers, €25 in Annecy and Rouen, €17 in Orléans.
