Oxygen on Earth is starting to run low, humans need a new planet

JAKARTA – The efforts of scientists to find other habitable planets cannot be separated from the conditions Earth increasingly vulnerable. Scientists estimate that drastic climate change makes the atmosphere thinner and reduces oxygen levels on earth so that it can destroy life.

Indeed, the conditions did not come as quickly as now, but if climate change is allowed, the earth’s atmosphere will gradually thin out. This will bring the planet back to the state it was in the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) about 2.4 billion years ago.

Reported Science Alert, Monday (11/10/2021), scientists have warned that the atmosphere is not a permanent filter to protect the earth. Research into deoxygenation can serve as a warning that life on earth could be wiped out.

“The decline in oxygen was so extreme that it could be one million times less oxygen in the future,” said the scientist Earth Chris Reinhard, of the Georgia Institute of Technology, told New Scientist earlier this year.

According to calculations by Reinhard and environmental scientist Kazumi Ozaki, of Toho University in Japan, Earth’s oxygen-rich habitable history could end at only 20-30 percent of the planet’s overall lifespan.

“The atmosphere after great deoxygenation is characterized by increased methane, low CO2 levels, and no ozone layer,” Ozaki said.

This research is very relevant for scientists to start looking for habitable planets outside the Solar System. Now astronomers are starting to aim beyond the solar system with the most advanced telescopes at their disposal.

Scientists are also looking for other biological signs besides oxygen to have the best chance of finding life outside the solar system. The study is part of NASA’s NExSS (Nexus for Exoplanet System Science) project, which investigates the habitability of planets other than our own.
