Owner ship and operator Suez Canal agree on s…

The owners of the Ever Given have reached an agreement with the operator of the Suez Canal about compensation. The ship blocked the important shipping route between Europe and Asia for almost a week in March.

This is a provisional agreement, the London law firm that assists the owners and insurers of the container giant said on Wednesday. “After extensive negotiations in recent weeks with the negotiating committee of the Suez Canal Authority, an agreement in principle has been reached between the various parties,” said law firm Stann Marine.

Both parties will now finalize the deal as soon as possible. Afterwards, the necessary arrangements are made so that the ship can leave Egypt. Financial details have not been released.

The 400-metre long ship, one of the largest container ships in the world, ran aground in the southern part of the canal at the end of March after bad weather. The Ever Given was completely in the way, so there was no getting through for six days. Countless ships had to wait until the waterway was cleared again.

Initially, the channel operator asked 900 million dollars to compensate for the loss of transit money, the damage and the salvage. Subsequently, that amount dropped to $550 million. The Japanese ship owner, Shoei Kisen Kaisha, and insurers initially only wanted to cough up $150 million. Evergreen Line from Taiwan had chartered the ship en route from China to Rotterdam.

The salvage workers were able to refloat the ship on March 29. Since then, the ship has been waiting for a lake halfway along the canal route.
