Overwatch 2 Director Hints at Return of Story Content
Blizzard Entertainment’s hero shooter, Overwatch 2, may be bringing back its narrative elements, according to game director Aaron Keller. In a recent Twitch stream, Keller acknowledged player sentiment regarding the game’s lack of story adn lore, admitting that the team “dropped the ball.”
keller’s comments come after the highly publicized cancellation of the game’s ambitious PvE story missions and hero modes. Blizzard had initially planned extensive narrative content to accompany Overwatch 2’s launch, but ultimately shifted focus to the game’s PvP multiplayer experience.
“to speak frankly about it, we did have a big plan to go after story in the game,” Keller stated during the stream. “That was the PvE side of it with the campaign and everything like that. That didn’t work out.”
He further elaborated that the team experienced a “reset moment” after the PvE plans were scrapped. Though, Keller expressed a desire to “get back to it,” emphasizing that the game’s universe and characters are “one of the best parts of Overwatch.” He suggested that a step backward was necessary to allow for future progress in this area.Keller concluded by asserting that for Overwatch 2 to be “firing on all cylinders,” story content needs to be reintroduced, hinting that new narrative initiatives might already be in development.Overwatch 2’s current season, Season 17: Powered Up, is now live.
