What is fear and what causes it?
Anxiety is a state of nervous system arousal that is activated in response to situations that generate fear and uncertainty. Although most people experience fear as unpleasant, this emotion has a very important function. Fear triggers survival mechanisms. It heightens our sense of unease and alerts us to potential dangers to our survival, prompting us to take action and get ourselves to safety.
Olga Willemsen explains that our brains are programmed by default to look for alarming signals and potential dangers to our survival in the outside world. It applies to every living being, including humans. That means we instinctively tend to notice negative events and focus our attention on them. At the same time, positive events are more likely to escape our attention, while our perception of the negative may be exaggerated.
In this way, the human perception of reality (which is neutral) is constantly distorted and biased toward attention to negative events. Paradoxically, this tendency toward negativity undermines our confidence and self-esteem and increases self-doubt.
This tendency to focus on the negative is reinforced by negative childhood events that trigger unconscious limiting beliefs. Those limiting beliefs are the root cause of heightened anxiety. If the root of self-doubt is left untouched, anxiety becomes a self-limiting belief and can develop into a disorder.
How to treat anxiety without medication?
Olga Willemsen’s approach combines hypnotherapy with coaching (Hypno-coaching) in a series of sessions that take place within a month.
