This would support the thesis that healthy carriers play a major role in the spread of the coronavirus.

More than 40% of the inhabitants of an Italian city infected with the coronavirus had no symptoms, it emerges from a study published Tuesday in the journal Nature.

The study was carried out in the Italian city of Vo, where a first death related to the coronavirus was recorded in February. Almost immediately after, the city was quarantined, and around 85% of the inhabitants were tested. These tests showed that 2.3% of the population was infected. Among the infected inhabitants, 42.5% of them showed no symptoms.

The survey highlights the importance of large-scale testing and isolation of people with the SARS-Cov-2 virus, scientists said. Infected residents with no symptoms had the same amount of virus in their bodies as patients with symptoms.

“A healthy carrier is not aware of the infection and, depending on his lifestyle and his profession, he may meet a lot of people,” explains Enrico Lavezzo, one of the researchers.

Scientists also found that children under the age of 10 were not infected, despite the fact that some of them lived with infected adults.
