As of today, four vaccination teams are out and about in the Hanover region. It is also starting in the Nienburg district. In the districts of Cloppenburg and Osnabrück as well as the county of Bentheim vaccinations are already taking place.
In the Hanover region, the staff and residents in two nursing homes are to be vaccinated against the coronavirus today. This is reported by NDR 1 Lower Saxony. Which homes the mobile teams visit has not been announced in advance in order not to cause unrest there, as it was said. Almost 1,000 vaccine doses are currently available. The mobile teams are also ready to go to the first care homes in the Nienburg district. After vaccination in the Osnabrück district since Sunday, teams in the city of Osnabrück are also on the road from today.
Many counties will not start until next week
Meanwhile, Lower Saxony’s Economics Minister Bernd Althusmann (CDU) will visit a corona vaccination center in Buchholz (Harburg district) today. There he also wants to comment on the partially delayed vaccination start in Lower Saxony. In the north-east of the country, but also in the districts of Schaumburg, Hildesheim and Hameln-Pyrmont, the mobile vaccination teams are not expected to start work until next week.
180 vaccinated in Nordhorn
In the city of Nordhorn in the Grafschaft Bentheim district, around 180 people were vaccinated on Tuesday. These were residents and employees of a nursing home as well as members of the mobile vaccination team, as a spokeswoman for the district explained. The district is one of the worst affected regions nationwide. On Sunday, vaccinations against Covid-19 began in two particularly badly affected districts in Lower Saxony – Cloppenburg and Osnabrück.

Scholz: “Full understanding” of delays
Around 127,000 vaccine doses should be available by the end of the year. According to Heiger Scholz, the head of the state government’s corona crisis team, vaccine will be delivered when the municipalities are ready. Especially now, between Christmas and New Year, it is a major challenge for many retirement and nursing homes to do the necessary organizational work and obtain the consent of the residents, said Scholz. “The aim must be to vaccinate as many people as possible when the mobile teams visit the facilities. This requires a great deal of effort from the employees on site and a certain amount of preparation time, for which we fully understand.” He assumes that most municipalities will start vaccinations in the first week of January, Scholz continued.
State government asks for patience
The Lower Saxony Ministry of Health pointed out that most people in Lower Saxony still have to be patient. “The 50 vaccination centers will not start operating until the next step in January,” said a statement. Therefore it is currently not possible to use the The state’s vaccination hotline to make appointments: “The state government will communicate the start of appointments in good time and well in advance and asks for a little patience.”
