Ostapenko, who ranks 43rd in the WTA rank, beat Davis, who ranks 67th, in the central court with 6-2, 6-3.

Unusually in the first set, the Latvian tennis player started the set with a convincingly won game of his service, reaching 5-0 after a while. In the seventh game, it was not possible to serve the set, because the serve did not listen, making several double mistakes. However, serving Davis, Ostapenko was great, the opponent lost a set with a double error – 6-2 in favor of the Latvian tennis player.

The second set was much tighter. Serving the first game, the Latvian tennis player won in the “dry”. The opponent also convincingly won the next game. After that, the host tennis player won the point in four games in a row, until Ostapenko stopped the series in the seventh game, immediately scoring another point, serving Davis – 5-3.

Although the first game was won by an American in the ninth game, the Latvian tennis player won with the second match ball – 6-2, 6-3.

For the victory Ostapenko earned 30 world ranking points.

In 2017, the two tennis players met in the semi-finals of the Auckland tournament, in the third set of which Ostapenko withdrew, thus the opponent won. It is in this tournament that Davis has won his only WTA title so far.

Ostapenko resumed the season last week without beating the first round of the Rome WTA “Premier” tournament. She started the year at the Australian Open, where she stopped in the second round, but then lost in the first match of the St. Petersburg tournament and advanced to the third round in Doha. He has currently celebrated three victories in seven games on the WTA tour.

Davis, who did not beat the qualification, also played in Rome – after the resumption of the season, the American has a series of four losses. He has won five games in 14 games this season, but has only had two successes in a row in Hobart.

In the second round, Ostapenko will meet with the third racket of the tournament, Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands, who ranks eighth in the ranking. Bertensai’s first round is free. Initially, the opponents were Czech Karolina Plishkova, but she reached the final in a tournament in Rome, so she will not play in Strasbourg.

Ostapenko is also taking part in the doubles competition in this tournament, where he and the Canadian Gabriel Dabrovsky have been placed with the second number. On Sunday, the Latvian-Canadian duo defeated the American Katlin Christian and the Mexican Giljan Olmos in the first round with the result 6-2, 3-6, 10: 5, but in the quarterfinals they will face the Japanese Nao Hibino and Makoto Ninomy.

The WTA “International” series tournament in Strasbourg takes place on a red clay surface and its tennis players have their last competition before the French Open.
