The Oscar Academy wants to promote diversity and equality in its own ranks and at Oscar awards with new measures. The film association, which has over 9,000 members, announced planned changes on Friday. For example, a newly created body should develop guidelines for Oscar nominations that take into account aspects such as inclusion and diversity.
The ideas developed by the Task Force will then be taken into account from the 94th award ceremony in 2021. In addition, the number of contenders in the top division “Best Film” should be fixed to ten films. In recent years, this number has fluctuated between five and ten candidates due to the voting process.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences aims to offer courses and discussion groups to members to reduce bias and address issues such as ethnic discrimination. According to the announcement, the association also wants to pay attention to more diversity – for example more blacks, Latinos and Asians – when new members are admitted every year and to increase the proportion of women.
The Academy members determine the Oscar winners each year. The association traditionally consisted of predominantly male members of white skin. The lack of diversity had led to fierce criticism of the association in recent years, especially when African Americans were largely overlooked in the Oscar nominations.
