Orsay Museum. The National Assembly wants to add the name of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing to it

The National Assembly unanimously asked on Thursday March 25 that the name of the former President of the Republic Valéry Giscard d’Estaing is attached to that of the Orsay and Orangerie museums in Paris.

A non-binding resolution to this effect from the center-right opposition group UDI, one of the heirs of the UDF founded by the former president, was adopted with 91 votes for and one abstention (LFI).

The text proposed by the deputy Yannick Favennnec-Bécot “Invites the government to examine the addition of the name of the former President of the Republic, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, on behalf of the Musée d’Orsay”.

Rename the esplanade?

Louis Giscard d’Estaing, son of the former head of state, attended the vote in the stands of the Palais Bourbon.

Two options exist: add his name to that of the museum, or rename the esplanade which adjoins it, indicated the minister responsible for relations with the Parliament Marc Fesneau. A decision will be made ” in the next weeks “ by President Emmanuel Macron and Minister of Culture Roselyne Bachelot, he added.

The decision to establish the Musée d’Orsay in the setting of this former station built at the end of the 19th century was taken during his mandate, in 1977.

It is in this museum that the French were able to come and sign a guest book in tribute to “VGE” after his death on December 2 at the age of 94. The Musée de l’Orangerie which is associated with it is located nearby, on the other bank of the Seine.
