“Ori 2” in the test: Lichtgeist (almost) alone in the forest – game tests

In the sequel to the celebrated “Ori and the Blind Forest”, Vienna’s Moon Studios offer more of everything – more action, more emotion, more variety.

In 2015, “Ori and the Blind Forest” suddenly became one of the best exclusive games for Microsoft’s Xbox One. A lot has happened since then – the game is now even available on Nintendo Switch – but expectations for the sequel “Ori and the Will of the Wisps” have not decreased. On the contrary: Viennese chief developer Thomas Mahler from Moon Studios, whose employees work all over the world from home, promised a leap that with that of “Super Mario Bros.” on “Super Mario Bros. 3”. That may have been a bit too high, but the game manufacturer nevertheless delivered an excellent game.

Emotional entry

The plot ties directly to the predecessor. Ori, his mother figure Naru and Gumo are, so to speak, adding to the family. Because a chick hatches from the last egg of the giant Kuro bird from the first part – it gets the name Ku. At first everything seems to be wonderful, in an emotionally gripping intro you experience several happy months of the small family, but there is a problem: Ku has a wing that is not fully functional. When a violent storm breaks out on a flight with Ori, the friends are separated and end up in a gloomy forest. Ori has to search for Ku and “drive away” the darkness from nature.

Ori has learned a few new tricks – or is learning them to be completely correct. Because while the little hero had a lot of skills at the end of the first game, you have to start all over again in the sequel and even have to earn the double jump first. But the further you go, the more diverse the possibilities become. This even affects weapons. Instead of attacking enemies with target-seeking ranged attacks as in the first game, Ori now gets a kind of light blade very quickly. Bow and arrow followed, as well as other attacks that continuously damage all nearby enemies.

Passive skills help to develop the martial and movement skills, of which Ori can initially activate up to three at the same time. This includes damage bonuses or the ability to cling to walls. Interesting trade-offs are also possible – for example, significantly more damage in exchange for greatly increased vulnerability. Completing challenges can equip more than three passive skills.

Nice and hard

Bonuses, skills and the expansion of attacks at a retailer are also urgently needed, because the new Ori game demands a lot from the players. The Metroidvania adventure demands precise timing in platforming passages and perseverance. Even after several deaths, you never have the feeling that the game is unfair.

This is due to the perfectly balanced puzzles and challenges that would not work without the perfect pixel-perfect control. Time and again there are stressful platforming sequences where a wrong jump can lead to death. These passages served as “boss fights” in the predecessor, this time there are real encounters with huge opponents. These are demanding on the middle of three levels of difficulty, but never unfair.

A playable work of art

If you are not being rushed by the numerous new opponents, you should also pause from time to time and admire the picturesque landscapes of the game. The game world is significantly larger and more angular than in the first part, can still be crossed without loading times. Once again, the team at Moon Studios has surpassed itself and created an apparently lively world in which the tufts of ferns sway in the wind, the bogs are bubbling and the animals frolic in the thicket. Add to that the phenomenally atmospheric music of the composer Gareth Coker.

The area looks even more lively thanks to a small settlement that was initially destroyed and overgrown with thorny tendrils. There are loads of NPCs here, which even have side quests for Ori. Over time and using the necessary resources, the oasis can be rebuilt in the middle of the forest. This is good for the mystical atmosphere.

Conclusion

“Ori and the Will of the Wisps” did not become a “Super Mario Bros. 3”, but it is a fantastic game that surpasses its predecessor in all areas. Ori is more agile than ever, gigantic boss monsters offer a real challenge and in quiet moments, numerous new friends ensure a gripping, emotional action.
