Oregon Ensures SNAP Benefits Continue Despite Federal Challenges
Oregon residents who believe they did not receive their full November SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, or an incorrect amount, are encouraged to contact their local ODHS (Oregon Department of Human Services) office or call 800-699-9075, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This guidance comes amid ongoing federal actions regarding SNAP funding.
ODHS acknowledges that recent federal changes and directives may be causing variations in benefit amounts. Residents are urged to continue applying, renewing their eligibility, and reporting any changes that could affect their benefits to ensure timely distribution once regular processing resumes.
The situation stems from a dispute with the Trump administration over the restoration of SNAP benefits following a court order.Governor Tina Kotek strongly defended Oregon’s actions, stating the state acted lawfully in accordance with the court’s directive and dialogue with the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture).
“Oregon acted lawfully, given the federal court’s directive and the communications with the USDA,” Kotek said. She sharply criticized the attempt to reclaim funds, saying, “I am disgusted that President Trump has the audacity to take taxpayers’ money away from them when they are in crisis.” She further questioned the administration’s priorities, asking what the funds would be used for rather of providing groceries for those in need.
Governor Kotek assured Oregonians that, despite ongoing litigation, current SNAP benefits are unaffected and recipients should continue to use their Oregon Trail Cards. Her emergency food declaration remains in effect, and her office is collaborating with Attorney General Dan Rayfield to ensure continued food access for Oregonians.
Attorney General Rayfield echoed the Governor’s sentiment, stating, “the President is abusing his office and bullying hungry Americans. Putting food on the table is not a political bargaining chip. It’s our obligation to hold him accountable. We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that peopel continue to receive their SNAP benefits, and that includes the benefits that went out on Friday.”
The Trump administration had demanded states “undo” full SNAP benefits previously distributed under court orders, warning of potential penalties for non-compliance. However, Oregon, along with over two dozen other states represented by Democratic attorneys general, reported that the administration was already refusing to reimburse them for legally-ordered SNAP payments even before the Supreme Court intervened.
