The introduction of an embargo on Russian energy carriers will stop the Hungarian economy, the prime minister said.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said his country’s economy would stall if Budapest complied with Ukraine’s request for an embargo on Russian energy. He said this on the radio on March 27, writes EP.
“The question for Hungary is not whether it is ready to pay a little more money for energy and help Ukraine, because then we would be ready for this. It is about whether the gas will come at all,” Orban said.
According to him, Ukraine is asking Hungary not to use 61 percent of all Hungarian oil, and this will mean that the country will face a shortage of fuel.
In addition, Orban said that if Hungary imposed an embargo on Russian gas, it would mean that 85 percent of all Hungarian gas consumption would disappear.
“If there is no oil and gas, the Hungarian economy will stop: factories will be closed, there will be massive unemployment. What the Ukrainians are asking is to completely stop the Hungarian economy, lose years of development again and reduce the productivity level of the Hungarian economy to a level that was 8- 10 years ago,” he said.
Orban stressed that he would do everything in his power for Ukraine, “but you cannot demand to destroy yourself for their sake.”
On the eve of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressing Orbancalled on the Hungarian leader “not to hesitate in making decisions on sanctions, at a time when the Russian occupiers in Ukraine are engaged in massacres.”
Earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest would do everything possible to protect the Hungarians from war and will not give up Russian gas and oil.
