Orange Peel Can Be Called To Lower Cholesterol By Up To 40 Percent

The antioxidant compounds found in orange peel can lower high cholesterol.

Fat molecules characterize this condition as dangerous because they cause the buildup of harmful plaque in the arteries, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. A body of research shows, compounds found in Orange peel can significantly lower the levels cholesterol dangerous up to 40 percent.

“Two out of five people who have high cholesterol and are at significant risk for heart disease; and about 6.5 million adults in the UK are currently taking lipid-lowering drugs such as statins,” the National Health Service (NHS) said in a statement. Express, Tuesday (18/1/2022).

A body of research detailed in Science Daily confirms the antioxidant compounds found in the skin Orange can lower high cholesterol more effectively than some drugs, even without side effects.

High cholesterol is characterized by high levels of low density lipoprotein, or bad cholesterol circulating in the blood. Moment fat molecules sticking to the walls of arteries, they cause narrowing, limiting the space for blood to flow through them.

The study’s lead researcher and Vice President of Research at KGK Synergies in Ontario Canada, Dr Elzbieta Kurowska, said her research had shown that polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) have the strongest cholesterol-lowering effect of any other citrus flavonoid. “We believe that PMFs have the potential to rival and even defeat the cholesterol-lowering effects of some drugs, without the risk of side effects,” said Dr Kurowska.

The study findings were from a hamster model with induced high cholesterol. The researchers showed that feeding pet food containing one percent PMF, could lower LDL cholesterol levels by 32 to 40 percent.

Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the findings also establish that PMFs have marked similarities to a number of other plant compounds found in citrus fruits, which are associated with many health benefits.

Separate studies have shown positive associations between similar flavonoids, such as hesperidin found in oranges and naringin from grapefruit. According to a paper published in the Journal of Integrative Food, Nutrition, and Metabolism, limes with bergamot have also been shown to reduce cholesterol levels by up to 29 percent, and LDL levels by up to 52 percent.

But Dr Kurowska explains, although drinking citrus drinks can bring significant health improvements, consuming PMF may be an easier way to lower cholesterol. He said a person should drink 20 cups or more of orange or tangerine juice, to benefit from its therapeutic effects. It is hypothesized that the mechanism of action of PMF works by inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver.

Page Healthline also explains that even if eaten in small amounts, lemon peels are very nutritious. With just one tablespoon, it already provides nine percent of the daily value of vitamin C.

Several compounds found in fruit peels have been shown to lower the risk of cavities and gum infections, helping to maintain good oral health. What’s more, it’s also been associated with a reduced risk of certain diseases, such as: heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
